The record and its year
Holy Sick is the first thing WAAX released. It arrived on 29 September 2014, self-released, a little over two years after the band formed in Brisbane and four months after the debut single "Wisdom Teeth".
It lands in the middle of the band's busiest year of firsts. The same year brought the Triple J Unearthed slot at BIGSOUND in Brisbane, which is the earliest appearance in this archive's live register and the point at which the band stops being only a local proposition.
The line-up behind it is the one that would change most. Elijah Gall and Ariana Pelser had both joined in 2013 and both left in 2015, which makes this EP the only release either played on. Tom Bloomfield and Ewan Birtwell, who between them cover almost the whole history, are here at the start of it.
The record was self-released. There is no label to record, no chart placing to cite, and no catalogue number beyond the one this index assigns. That absence is itself the useful fact: everything from Big Grief onward has an external paper trail, and this does not.
It was issued digitally and nothing else. No pressing means no distributor, no stock, no shipping date and no retail listing, which is why the entry for this EP is the shortest of the five and why the ones that follow get longer rather than better written. A digital-only release leaves a date and a title behind, and very little else that can be checked years later.
Read against the rest of the catalogue, the useful thing about Holy Sick is the distance it sets. Five years separate it from Big Grief, and in that gap the band went from a self-issued EP with two singles around it to an album on Dew Process with a chart placing and a national tour. Both facts sit in the same register, one after the other, which is the whole argument for keeping a register at all.
