The line-up map, rebuilt from years
The people section used to be a list of names with dates in brackets. It is now a map in which the horizontal axis is time, each core member is a bar running from the year they joined to the year they left, and exactly one bar runs the whole width.
The change was made because tenure is the part of a line-up that can actually be verified. Names can be recorded from almost anywhere. Who was in the band in a given year, and for how long, has to come from release credits, contemporary coverage and announcements, and it is that second kind of fact the register is for.
What the map shows
Nine musicians have been core members since June 2012. Maz DeVita has been there throughout, which is why hers is the only bar that spans the full width. Tom Bloomfield played drums from the first line-up until the 2023 farewell shows, and Ewan Birtwell played guitar and bass from 2013 to the same point; between them they cover almost the entire history, and their bars ending together is the single clearest visual marker of what happened in 2023.
The middle of the map is busier than the ends. Elijah Gall and Ariana Pelser both joined in 2013 and both left in 2015, and Tom Griffin and Chris Antolak both arrived in that same 2015 turnover. Griffin stayed six years, through both EPs and the debut album, and Antolak four. James Gatling's bar runs 2019 to 2022, which places him across the Big Grief touring cycle and the making of At Least I'm Free.
What the rebuild fixed
Two errors came out of drawing it rather than listing it. Gall and Birtwell had been dated to 2012 in earlier accounts of the band, including on this domain; both actually joined in 2013. And Jordan Cardenas, who played guitar in the 2012 line-up and left the following year, had been missing from those accounts entirely. On a list, a short early tenure is easy to drop. On a time axis it leaves a visible hole at the start, which is how it was noticed.
This is the general argument for the format. A list tolerates omissions silently. A map of tenure has a shape, and a missing year has to go somewhere.
Touring musicians are listed apart
Five musicians tour with the current project: Izzy de Leon, Karelia Moloney, Jonathan Tooke, Rangi Barnes and Vincent McIntyre. They appear in the people section, but below the map rather than on it.
The separation is deliberate and it is not a judgement about anyone's contribution. Since late 2023 the project has run as DeVita's, with a rotating group around her rather than a fixed band. Drawing those five as tenure bars would imply an arrangement that has not been stated, and merging them into the nine would misrepresent both groups at once. Keeping the two lists apart is the only version that stays inside what is on the record.
What the register does not record
No pronouns appear anywhere in the people section. They are not sourced for these musicians, and guessing them from a name is exactly the kind of inference this index avoids everywhere else, so the register carries role and years and stops there.
Instrument credits are kept broad for the same reason. Where someone moved between guitar and bass across their time in the band, as Birtwell did, the entry says so rather than pinning a single instrument to a person across a decade of releases.
