Eight musicians have come and gone since 2012. Maz DeVita has not. This page records what the archive holds about the WAAX vocalist whose bar runs the full width of the line-up map, and what changed in November 2023 when the project continued around Maz DeVita alone.
Maz DeVita is the founder and only constant member of WAAX. Marie “Maz” DeVita formed the band in Brisbane in June 2012 on vocals and guitar, and has been the WAAX vocalist ever since. Within the first two years the arrangement around her had already shifted twice: Jordan Cardenas played guitar through 2013, and when Ariana Pelser took bass that same year DeVita moved into a vocal role alone.
From there she is the fixed point. Every record this archive holds carries her: the Holy Sick and Wild & Weak EPs, and the albums Big Grief, At Least I’m Free and Angel’s Mess. No other member appears on more than four of the seven.

April to November 2023
A hiatus was announced in April 2023 and the full line-up played farewell shows at The Triffid in Brisbane that June, the last row in the live register before a three-year gap in the discography. Tom Bloomfield and Ewan Birtwell, who between them covered almost the entire history, both end their tenure at that point.
In November of the same year the project returned around DeVita, with touring musicians rather than a fixed band. Angel’s Mess followed on 13 March 2026 on a new label, Drunk on Power, after two albums on Dew Process. The change of label and the change of line-up arrive together, which is the clearest external marker of what happened.
The gap between the single “Read Receipts” in 2022 and “Ur A Rat” in 2025 is the longest in the discography. A register of dated releases tends to make an interruption visible without anyone having to characterise it.

What the arithmetic says
Nine musicians hold a tenure in this register and only one of them spans it end to end. Set the seven releases against the line-up map and the gap widens: DeVita is on all seven, and no other member is on more than four. Two came close, both ending in 2023, and the other six each cover a stretch of two to four years. That is the whole argument for recording tenure rather than a group photograph, because a photograph of any single year would show a band that had already changed twice or was about to.

Who is Maz DeVita?
Marie "Maz" DeVita is the founder, principal songwriter and only constant member of the Australian band WAAX, formed in Brisbane in June 2012. Since November 2023 the project has continued as hers.
